Why is this Medication Prescribed?

TAMOXOL is prescribed for the treatment of breast cancer. It is also used to reduce the risk of breast cancer in women at high risk, both before and after menopause.

  • Treatment of breast cancer

  • Reduction of breast cancer risk in high-risk women
  • Management of infertility (in select cases, under medical supervision)

How Should this Medicine be Used?

  • Use additional non-hormonal contraception (condoms, barrier methods), as tamoxifen may reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills

Other Uses

Tamoxifen may also be prescribed for infertility treatment, but only under close medical supervision.

⚠️ Blood Clot Risk Warning

This medicine may increase the risk of blood clots (deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism).

  • Seek urgent medical help if you develop leg pain/swelling, chest pain, or sudden shortness of breath
  • Tell your doctor if you have a history of clotting disorders before starting this medicine

Special Precautions

  • Inform your doctor if you:
    • Have a history of blood clot disorders
    • Are currently receiving infertility treatment
    • Have liver disease or abnormal liver function tests
  • Routine monitoring: Your doctor may perform blood tests to check liver function and calcium levels

  • Use effective contraception (non-hormonal) during treatment
  • Not recommended in pregnancy or breastfeeding — tamoxifen may harm the baby
  • Always inform your doctor of all medications you are taking, as tamoxifen may interact with them

Possible Side Effects

  • Hot flashes
  • Mood swings
  • Nausea
  • Vaginal discharge
  • Vaginal bleeding or irregular periods
  • Fluid retention (swelling in legs or hands)

Serious side effects (seek medical advice immediately):

  • Unexplained vaginal bleeding or abnormal discharge
  • Signs of blood clot (leg pain, chest pain, shortness of breath)
  • Sudden vision changes

Storage & Disposal

  • Store at room temperature, away from heat and moisture
  • Keep out of reach of children
  • Do not use after the expiry date
  • Dispose of unused tablets safely — do not flush into drains

Emergency Guidance

  • Call emergency services if you develop severe chest pain, sudden shortness of breath, or leg swelling

  • Seek urgent care for sudden vaginal bleeding, severe allergic reaction (swelling of face, lips, or difficulty breathing), or vision problems
  • If overdose is suspected, contact a poison control center or go to the nearest emergency department
