Product Information

Flagyl (Metronidazole) is an antibiotic used to treat infections caused by bacteria and certain parasites. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. It does not treat viral infections such as colds or flu. Misuse or unnecessary use may increase the risk of antibiotic resistance.

Why is this Medication Prescribed?

Doctors prescribe Flagyl to:

  • Treat infections of the reproductive system, gastrointestinal tract, skin, lungs, heart, blood, nervous system, bones, and joints.
  • Treat certain sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

How Should this Medicine be Used?

    • Take once daily for 7 days.
    • Take at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal.
    • Swallow whole — do not split, chew, or crush.
  • Take exactly as prescribed. Do not skip doses or stop early, even if you feel better.
  • Continue treatment for the full prescribed course to prevent resistance.

Other Uses

  • Sometimes prescribed off-label for other bacterial or parasitic infections.

🍷 Alcohol Warning

Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine and for at least 3 days after the last dose.

  • Combining alcohol with this medicine may cause severe nausea, vomiting, cramps, headache, flushing, and chest pain.
  • Seek emergency medical help if you experience severe reactions after alcohol use.

Special Precautions

Before taking Flagyl, inform your doctor if you:

  • Have liver disease, blood disorders, or nervous system conditions.
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding (use only if prescribed by a doctor).
  • Are taking other antibiotics, anticoagulants, or medications that affect the liver.

Possible Side Effects

Common (usually mild):

  • Nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite
  • Diarrhea or stomach cramps
  • Metallic taste in mouth

Serious (seek medical advice immediately):

  • Numbness, tingling, or seizures
  • Severe allergic reaction (rash, swelling, breathing difficulty)
