Topical Antiviral Medication

Why is this Medication Prescribed?

Acivir 5GM Cream (generic name: Acyclovir 5% W/W, also known as Aciclovir 5% W/W) is an antiviral medicine used to treat skin symptoms caused by the herpes simplex virus.

  • Effective for treating cold sores on the lips and face, as well as genital and rectal herpes lesions.
  • May also be used to treat certain herpes simplex virus–related sores in individuals with weakened immune systems.
  • Belongs to a class of antiviral medications known as synthetic nucleoside analogues, which work by preventing the spread of the herpes virus in the body.

⚠️ Important Note: Acivir 5GM Cream does not cure cold sores or genital herpes, does not prevent future outbreaks, and does not stop transmission to others.

Recommended Ways to Use

  • Wash your hands.
  • Clean and dry the affected skin area.
  • Apply a thin layer of cream over the cold sore or the area where one may be forming.
  • Rub gently until the cream disappears.
  • Leave the area uncovered (unless otherwise directed by your doctor).
  • Wash your hands with soap and water after applying.
  • Avoid washing off the treated area immediately; do not bathe, shower, or swim right after use.
  • Prevent irritation of the treated area.
  • Always follow your doctor’s instructions.

Missed Dose

  • Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember.
  • If it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose.
  • Do not apply extra cream to make up for a missed dose.
